Buying an extra key.
In order to program your own key you have to have two keys. If you lost one as the original poster said, then you have to go to the dealer to have a second one programmed (or maybe a locksmith?).
Once you have the second programmed key, you can then program a third key yourself.

That makes sense. It sucks when you think about it how easy for some people it would be to do that with certain vehicles. Kinda makes me happy my keys have chips in them.
I had "lost" a key (long story) when I was a couple hours away from my spare set. It cost me $170 to get 2 new keys since I wasn't in any bargaining situation.
During that time, I got asked by 4 people if I could just "pop the door open" so that they could get inside. They couldn't seem to remember that I had lost my key and that is why I was needing their "help" in the first place...
From what I was told, the 2 new keys will only work and your original spare won't. You can get the original spare to work by doing something with the 3 keys and the car, but I can't remember what exactly.
I was also told that only Ford dealers could make/program new keys.

needing both keys to program another key is a security feature which prevents your key from being copied otherwise some one could take your spare key to some one with a key copying machine and cut the same and copy it without your permission with self programing it through the computer chip programmer built into the car, this makes it so that they can log copying the key if only one key is used to make a copy for security reasons.
This whole process is actually seemingly designed to make a profit for Ford and nothing so useful that it absolutely needed to be included, but that might just be me being cynical. Then again maybe the bean counter that came up with it got a very nice new gt500 in actuallity.

For those with only 1 key:
not sure why the Dealership was wanting you to buy 2 keys...unless it was a poorly disguised ploy to seperate you from some cash. Either way, they are full of crap.
btw, @ JasperGT
1. go on eBay and buy a new key for $12-15 shipped...perhaps even buy 2 more keys
2. take the new key(s) to Walmart and have them cut for about $1 per key
3. Take 1 cut key to the Dealership and have it programmed to your car.
For those with 2 keys and want to add another:2. take the new key(s) to Walmart and have them cut for about $1 per key
3. Take 1 cut key to the Dealership and have it programmed to your car.
3a. should cost maybe $50 at max. it's a 1/2 hour labor charge, so ask what your Dealerships normal hourly wage is.
4. Once you have 2 working keys, follow the instructions in the Owners Manual and program your 3rd/4th/5th key (maximum of 6 keys).4a. If you don't have a Owners Manual, visit here: http://www.motorcraftservice.com/
4b. click the "Owners Guides" on the left

1. Buy as many as you'd like off eBay
2. Follow the instructions found in your owners manual.

unless the Dealership re-keyed your ignition and door locks for those 2 new keys, your old key(s) are still good. Follow the instructions inside your Owners Manual to add them to the PATS system of your car. very easy, and quick
I think the logic behind buying two keys verus one is if you only replace the one and some how lose one of thoses two keys your back to having to take it back to the dealer to cut another key and program that one. So shop time and key cost once again.
With three keys even if one is lost you can always buy a new key and follow the owners manual and reprogram the replacement.
Long story short I did the same thing ,lost I thought one of the keys got two new keys made and programed at the Ford Store around a $140 bucks as I recall. Three months later I find the lost key/fob. Well now I have four keys

I was told by the dealership that the old keys would open the doors (nothing was physically re-keyed), but that the old keys would not be able to start the car unless I did that thing that is in the owners manual.
you'll need all 4 keys in the car at the same time for the programming...really quite easy
