I've got some vinyl tint for my tail lights and stuff. I noticed the 3rd brake light and the rear side markers have raised lettering on them.

What's the best wait to tint over these? Seems like vinyl tint over raised lettering is a bad idea and I'm not sure if I should try sanding off the lettering.

 

Sanding off the lettering would deface the DOT specs and make them
illegal besides them being tinted...

Illegal perhaps, but I sanded the lettering on the 3rd brake light of my g/f's car before applying the "MUSTANG" vinyl decal. Looks great.

 

Yea, the DOT police are pasted thin over the UnitedStates.
Doubt they will find you.
Most likely a state inspection weeds out the defacers and tinters... LOL
You are safe and clear but if it comes down to the brass tacks, its illegal
to remove the DOT specs from automotive lighting products...

 

i just did all the tinting also. I didnt shave off the lettering but to be honest with you, it doesnt look bad. And anybody that has gotten close automatically says, "wow, the only place it is raised is where the factory lettering is"...

doesnt look like a defect or mistake is what i am getting at.
