Default Rustproofing ?

I recently bought a used 2008 GT and was wondering If I should have it rustproofed ? I live Illinois and the car will be garaged during the winter months.

I would, most definitely.
I spent most of my working life dealing with the Various O.E.M manufacturers in various countries, supplying everything from pre paint Chemical treatments of the vehicle bodies, right through to Underbody protective coatings and inner cavity Waxes.

I was HORRIFIED when I looked underneath my GT Mustang last week to see no protection is applied. I called and spoke to Ford Central Labs and learned "they don't do that no more", ----economics.

They did it once for a good reason, other companies still do it. I certainly intend doing mine. I'm in AZ, but were I in the Mid west I'd get it taken care of before Winter comes.
Just my opinion,---------Based on 30 years experience.

Retired now. Good luck.

NO!! I manage a bodyshop at a Honda dealership, been here since 1991 and we're in southern WV so we have plenty of rust...we sprayed the cars with rustproofing back in the day till Honda came in a told us either stop or they'll void the corrosion warrenty....rust proofing from what I've seen only adds to the problem, it does a better job of trapping the salt then keeping it out...best bet is to keep it off the roads best you can and if you have to drive it in the mess keep it washed regular and spray the underside as much as possible but do not have it rustproofed.

If applied correctly and to spec. It's a second skin,----nothing gets trapped. Even if entrapment was evident , there's nothing to corrode, as there is no contact with any ruptured paint film/exposed metal.
I just had a Battery leak(Motor craft) , ran underneath along main chassis for about 6 inches (RUSTY),Stripped the paint off, including the Cathodic E-Coat and Phosphate down to base metal.
Corrosion of course. H2SO4 very nasty stuff.

Don't listen to me , your choice. Visit Henkel web site. Read about it, call them and speak to them.

I guess Mercedes, BMW , audi, porche etc etc are all wrong eh ??

I have a PDF of Fords' recommended procedure, for applying their recommended product for anti corrosion treatment of the underside but cannot find a way to attach a PDF to this thread.
Maybe if you GOOGLE " i-car advantage online"---------- date of the article is Jan 15 2008

Motorcraft PM 24 and PM 25 are two Ford products they discuss

Ziebart have been around a long time, they should know know what they're doing.
If you'd like to PM me, I 'd be happy to send you that Ford article on their Underbody protection and product recommendation . It's PDF file: need Acrobat reader to open.

Define 'rustproofing'.
Spraying the underside with a rubberised coating
or professionally doing it by drilling holes
in panels and rustproofing from the inside out then
plugging the holes like the pros might do?
It really needs to be pristeen clean to get some
of those undercoating products to adhere properly.
Applied to dirt and it actually will trap moisture against
the panel and promote rust instead of preventing it.

Nothing keeps rust at bay like a nice clean vehicle....

I had a '69 Camaro Ziebarted once. Never again!
Everything I read says it's not necessary, and not even a good idea.

During the Manufacture of a Vehicle the Underbody protection is /was applied after the E-Coat, Nothing on the Body shell except Phosphate Coating and the Cathodic Electrocoat,---- VERY CLEAN and dry.
Innerbody Cavity Waxes were applied much later in the process and used primarily in Doors, occasionally on inner sections , trunk/hood cavities,--but always after all paint applications had been completed .

These days it seems , Vehicles are not given the whole treatment as they received some years ago. Paints have improved, but not to the point where they will not break down or be penetrated under the correct conditions. Once the paint is "broken" Rust will happen.
