Make the move to stick shift?
I currently own a '07 V6 Automatic, but have been looking around for a '09 GT. I've driven Automatic cars for quite some time but would like to own a manual for once. Would the GT be a wise choice to learn how to drive stick? I would like to know before I get in way over my head.
Honestly, i would stay with the auto. I Love my manual but i find myself wishing i had an auto everytime i get stuck in traffic and when i hear of guys roasting their tires 1st through 3rd with just a tune. Around where i live the manual is still nice but if you live in NYC you would probably hate it.
As far as learning its not to hard. I still cant get a very smooth start in first gear every time but its pretty easy to drive.

i have an 05 v6 auto and i Long for a stick shift!!!
im going to be getting an 09 GT next year and its going to be stick..i live in CA so i get traffic sometimes but i live in the country side of southern CA so i have a lot of back windey roads for me to cruise on. the only time i am glad i have an auto is when im coming home from the gym and my arms and legs are so dead that its an effort to steer let alone depress a clutch and shift lol
i want a stick so bad and if you can deal with the traffic in NYC then go for it otherwise you may regret it

It took me 15 years to learn how to finally drive a standard. I tried when I was 16 and decided to give it one more try at 31. These cars were the trick. Very user friendly and easy to do. The car pretty much tells you what to do, in a sense.
I'm glad I got a standard. Get yourself one, you won't regret it.

I'd definitely switch to standard if you're curious (I drive stick and love it, even commuting in SoCal every morning) but maybe learn on another car before doing so just so your tranny and clutch stay in pristine condition when you get your hands on it. But if you do have to learn on the stang it should be relatively easy since the shifter is so smooth and the car itself reacts pretty well. I've taught a couple people myself in my car.
automatics are cool...but it gets boring to drive one IMO
I much prefer my stick now. Drove a 5 speed F-150 as my DD for 3 yrs then went to my Auto 2003 GT. I missed the stick every day I owned that car...and it was fast as hell.
Now that I'm back into a stick, I'm loving life. I can do a 2nd gear scratch on demand...and it's satisfying to drop a gear on the highway.
as for learning to drive a stick, this would be a pretty ideal car to learn on. with a V-8 you won't have to rev up the motor as much. It makes things easier during take-off. You can't pick a better vehicle to learn with

Manuals are more fun than autos IMO. But I'd have bought an auto had I lived in the city AND if the Stang was my DD. I love my manual and don't mind occasional city traffic. You'll get a lot of different opinions on this. The Stang manual tranny isn't the easiest to learn on but it's definately worth it.
