i wouldn't mind walking but i work in a freezer and if my clothes get wet then i get too cold at work.

 

That is the ultimate best solution. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford the beater and the extra insurance (until AFTER their accident and then they'll say "I should have bought a beater!").

 

Just be careful and think about what your doing. No need to buy a beater just for the winter. Obviously if you have the money to spare then great. So many people out there dont know how to drive on anything but dry pavement, it really amazes me sometimes.

 

I want to run snow tires on my mustang this winter also (at least in the rear) anyone know where the best place to get the cheapest rims is? even steelies if they make them. just something cheap. I have the stock 17" on my car.

 

My experience is that you can find a good OEM rim on ebay or Craigslist for $100 or less each. This reduces problems such as fit and balancing over a cheap steel wheel.

Also, in my opinion, four winter tires such as Blizzaks are much better for all-around winter driving than a set of real snow tires on just the rear.

The initial investment is a bugger, but you will get many winters of care free driving with this set up.

I just ordered 4 Michelin X-Ice Xi2 Green X for my car. I will mount them to the stock rims then get another set of rims in the spring for my "summer set" (stock all seasons)

I was going to go with the Blizzaks but the X-ice have a $70 mail in rebate plus $2 less per tire. ordered from tire rack.

how much will i be looking at $$$ on mounting and balencing?

 

It's all in the details....

Mounting & balancing at my local Ford dealer is $25 a tire including new stems.
A local tire shop comes in at $20 bucks but here's the rub....TPMS.

If you want to have all your rims outfitted, add another $30-50 per non-sensored wheel.

For me, I found 18" polished spoked 2010 Mustang rims for $100 each on e-bay.
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D 235/50R-18 at $230 ea from Tire Rack (less $12ea rebate)
Valve stem TPMS sensor: $25 ea from e-bay (Dealer wanted $75ea)
Mounting & balancing: $25ea rim.
Taxes, shipping...yadda, yadda...another $30 each rim
For a grand total of......$1640 for the whole kit and kaboodle.

My '02 Acura had the same operation performed when I bought it new for $650

But I KNOW this will pay dividends each and every winter I own this car, and I will own this car for quite a long while.

well here is what i did.
got the Ice-X tires. A guy i work with has a 01 GT, he got cobra rims for it and had the stock rims in his garage i bought all 4 from him with tires for $150 mounted the snow tires on the 01 rims. Will keep my stock rims and tires for the summer, will use the ice-x and 01 rims for winter.
i know they will stick out a little because of the offset, i tried them on the car before i mounted the tires i liked them.

I am begining to like the way my car looks with the 18" wheels better than the optional 19".
