surge like how..when you first start a car the computer will keep it on the equilevent of 2nd gear to help the engine warm up faster..does it do it all the time..the rpm's should be steady when stopped..i have a 5 speed so im not sure about the auto but i doubt it should do that

Actually it does it while sitting after running, with the brake on.

Could be that the compressor is turning on so the engine raises the RPMs to compensate for the additional mechanics in motion...

Or it could be the choke sticking and raising the RPMs because it thinks that the engine needs to warm up a bit...

Whatever it is, IT SOUNDS BAD!!!

Go back to the dealer and ask them to fix it...

He said SURGING. Not staying at a constant RPM. And the car obviously has no choke cause it's not carbed (unless he's got a crate motor in it). And the issue is probably not that bad at all, It could just be a sensor or a filter of some sort.

So next time discofan, when you don't have anything smart to say, just don't say anything.

I am getting this issue as well when in automatic after about 2 hours of driving. I will be in neutral and it will surge to 2000 RPMS then go back down to normal without my foot on the gas...the car is new as I only have 2k miles on it and it does not give me a problem...yet. I do not know if this is common in Mustangs so at this time I will wait and see. If you do go to the dealer to get this fixed please post the results of the outcome
