Shorty Antennas

BlowByRacing has a pretty cool shorty antenna. It looks like it covers all of the base.

Most new cars have an antenna don't they? Anyway, I got one of the shorty's AJ mentioned. Don't care about reception, with USB/Sirius I don't listen to FM radio...ever.

I found this really funny. I was watching TV and saw a Ford commercial for the 2010 Mustang. I had to do a double take when I noticed they took the antenna off for the commercial! It looks pretty funny when you look for it. I paused my DVR and took a pic.

I believe I've seen (either) some sales brochures or pictures in magazines (reviews) where they did the same thing.
It wasn't as obvious as your DVR snapshot, but you could tell that an antenna should be poking up in the picture, yet it was missing.
Apparently, there's a disconnect between the marketing/advertising folks and the engineering folks at Ford, huh?

In an AutoTrader commercial they seemed to have removed it too.

Come to think of it, a '79 Camaro I used to drive had the antenna in the windshield too. And it was for both AM/FM.
I'm not sure why that design idea didn't stick around in automobiles; sure it makes windshield replacement more expensive, but that couldn't have been the reason they did away with, right?
Maybe the reception through them wasn't so good. Too far back for me to recall.

I cant figure out why they don't integrate the antenna better. It would be nice if it was tied into the rear window somehow so that it wouldn't increase the windshield cost. Or even a good ol' fashioned power retractable antenna...

Ditto; AM radio or MP3s most all the time.
My AM reception is fine with the shorty, but that's a product of locality (the surrounding terrain and broadcasting points within my area) and/or station preferences -- my guess.
Many folks have complained about poor reception over the standard AM/FM bands (at least on the '10 model with the stock antenna.)
Haven't taken her on out of town but once, but it was OK even then.
