I have the Escort 8500. Definitely like it and am amazed by how far away it picks up radar, but I have only had it a week.

Escort Passport 9500i FTW!!

It is absolutely amazing... it is such an improvement over old radar technologies. I've been using it for 2 years now, and I have NEVER seen a cop before I "HEARD" him. I once even picked up a cop from almost 2 miles away... I was shocked by this. Having the built in GPS is amazing because you can lockout the "K band" that every Walgreens/CVS/other drug store uses for their front doors so you never get those false alarms again. The new 9500ix goes a step further and will alert you to red light cameras, etc. as you approach them. Also, the GPS is nice because you can set it to read out your speed on the display so you can know exactly what speed you are traveling (more precise than your spedo).

I know it's a lot of money ($500), but I did a side by side comparison with a few other detectors and the 9500i was getting "full hit" when the others were only getting a very weak signal.

Hope this helps, and feel free to ask any questions you have!!

I don't need one. In my area they have these square white signs along the side of the road with numbers on them. I've figured out over the years that if your speedometer needle is lower than the number on the sign, you'll never get a speeding ticket! I had to.

Valentine 1 hands down is one of the best radar detectors, this thing saved me alot of times when i wasnt on my toes but to each their own...9500 is a good one too but i prefer the V1 over anything..

Ps go here http://www.radardetector.net/forums/ make an accoutn and ask away thats what i did and it lead me to the V1 you'll see what im talking about...Do your research first before you buy anything..

BEL STI Driver, Laser VEIL and Laser Shield.

BEL and Escort are under the same roof. You can't go wrong with a Valentine1 or any of the top-of-the-line BEL or Escort models. There is one Whistler and 1 Cobra, I believe, that have tested marginal. But be aware that you'll get a piece of crap for anything much under $150. Check out the test data in the "Tests & Reviews" section: http://www.guysoflidar.com/index.html

Radar detectors are a tool. You have to know how to interperet what it's telling you AND you still need a trained eye. There's a lot of good info on the site above plus links that'll tell you how to get the most out of your RD. As far as laser is concerned, you're pretty much tagged IF you get an alert. The laser beam is very narrow and you won't get much advanced (actually, little to none) warning since there's no backscatter. The only thing you can do for laser is either active jamming (if it's legal in your state) or passive jamming (VEIL coatings, other absorbant materials). Passive jamming will only reduce the laser's "punch-thru" before the LEO gets a clean return. We're talking a POSSIBLE 1-3 seconds advance notification IF you're lucky.

Research well before you buy.
