flowmaster AT classic AB review
after reading and hearing sound clips out the yazoo for the last few months I decided to pull the trigger on some flowmasters, i went with part #817460 which is the american thunder CLASSIC models, these are supposed to be an old school series 40 muffler with chrome tips and the correct angle inlet to match our cars. these are all stainless construction which is supposed to be much better than some of flowmasters other products. the sound of the old fox cars running flowmasters back in the early 90's was etched in my mind.
first off, I don't think there is anything that can make our cars sound like a fox body car, the 3v setup and I think the cam phasing may be the reason,
anyways here goes, the car sounds great at idle enough sound to let you know something is diffidently up with the car, it does have trumpeting or I think everyone refers to it as drone from 1500-1750 rpm at least that is what MY tach says, beyond about 1800rpm the car has a great interior sound, and at 70 mph isn't all that much louder inside than stock but you know its there, I say its just about right. for me with 3.73 gears I can slow all the way down to about 60-62 in 5th before I hear any issues with drone. which in that RPM range is kinda lugging the car.
the car sounds great at wide open throttle going through the gears, the funny thing is I can actually hear the tone of the engine alot better, before with the stock axle backs I was hitting the rev limiter sometimes before I knew it, with these its very clear what rpm range I am in. the car has a nice burble when you let off the gas, not the redneck 79 chevy pickup glass pack sound like I have heard with boomtubes.
I am very happy with these axle backs, I think they are a great choice with 3.73 or above gears. the drone issue is a non one because after I quit listening to exactly how the car sounded at each rpm and drove the car as I normally would and I never noticed it. I also noticed when I am normally rowing through the gears driving normally when I shift the RPM doesn't really ever drop below 2k as soon as I shift, i am well out of the drone range. below 2k is kinda lugging the car to me so I spend very little time below that, really the only time I noticed it was slowing down at an intersection and making a turn.
if you have 3.31 gears BTW my car is a 5 speed, these mufflers might not be the best for you, as crusing at 70 mph in 5th will be about 1800 rpm IIRC. if you slow a bit you will be in drone range, if you have 3.73 gears or higher to me drone will not bother you one bit.
the fit of these units are pretty good I guess, the right side fits perfectly it is centered in the opening and sticks out the correct amount, however the muffler is tilited just a bit and doesn't sit level, the left side needs some tweaking, its a little off center and stick out the back a little too much, I am probably being ****, but I will fix it either by bending or pushing the brackets, it was 13 degrees outside at night when I put these on so I did so in a hurry, when it warms up will teak on it.

Personally I stay far away from flowcrappers for 1 reason... the flow of the mufflers is terrible number wise... there are PLENTY of charts online showing the flow numbers of different mufflers compared... if your happy with them then good for you and im happy for you... fact is... they flow about the same as a stock muffler... just a tad bit better. but yes I would like to see a vid as well
im a big flowmaster guy i love them i have them on everything i own but they werent loud enough for me on the stangs so thats why i got mac but, you got the new version em i right which are supposed to be louder i would love to hear them as soon as you get a clip man
