How old is to old? (tires)
Just went to get my new tires put on, they just showed up at the tire shop here in town from the warehouse, and they were made in 2004! so i told them to get me newer one and i wasnt paying for a 6 year old tire thats been rotting in a warehouse. my question is in the topic.
FYI--they were 2 Nitto 555R2---305\35\18, the fronts were fine with a date of 26th week of 09

right on the side wall. im not sure if its printed on both sides so if you dont see it it might be on the inside. you should see 4 numbers the first two are the week of the year and the last 2 are the year. for example the ones they just tried to sell me were 1404--so the 14th week of 2004. i think the have a code in front of it so it might be 6 charecters long like---8Y1404--

Usually they print the date on the inside wall of the tire. Most of the time it has a circle around it.
Redsox401, you did the right thing by not accepting the old tires. They may look new, but who knows the condition of the rubber itself. It could be dry rotting.

thats what i thought, the shop is ordering new ones which will get here friday but they said its complete random what the dates will be. i just knew 6 years is way to old. i just hope the warehouse they order from isnt stocked with old Nittos. i hope they send fairly new tires, i dont think i want to buy anything that has been sitting in a warehouse for over 2 years.

I just learned about a month ago that they stamp the date on tires. Certainly did the right thing by checking them out and refusing them. Good call.
** edit: I would agree that 2 years is the max I would go for

Newer, recently manufactured tires have the date on the outside sidewall. I'm not sure when they started putting it on the outside instead of just on the inside, though.

there's a video on the forums here about tires and their manufacture date. The 6 year thing is correct. Anything above 6 years is no good. Look for the video. and yes, the nittos have the date imprinted on the inside. After I saw that video I ran to my garage to check out the date. I was relieved. mine are only 2 years old.
