Question '11 MT Skip Shift?

I have read reports in the news (From Jalopnik, I think) that the MT in the '11 GT is going to "feature" skip-shift technology, such as that installed in the Corvette. Does anybody know any more about this? I know in the Corvette it engages only between 15-19mph and at <23% throttle, will there be similar engagement parameters in the GT?

And, will it be as easy to disable as it is in the Corvette?

These are important questions... lol

Interesting. I had the skip shift in my GTO, at times it was a pain the a$$. I believe they put it in there to report a certain MPG, which may or may not have an impact on the gas guzzler tax...not sure on that one...

This article says it will have it. Hope it's easy to defeat because that's nonsense. A way to prop up the MPG figure, of course.

Basically if you aren't pushing the car hard, it locks out the next couple gears to force you into 4th. Supposed to save gas that way.

I know plenty of Corvette owners who hated it, and a couple aftermarket companies came out with different ways to defeat this very easily. One solution my friend had was a simple solenoid setup (no wire cutting or anything) that prevented the gears from being locked out.

From my research on various corvette forums, it seems there are conflicting stories as to why precisely it was done. There are two main camps; those who claim it was done to prop up fuel economy on the mileage test course and therefore avoid the "gas-guzzler" tax, and those who claim it was done to satisfy noise abatement requirements by the government. The specifics say that the test must be started out in first gear, then shifted to the next highest gear and floored. It's understandable that a WOT run in 4th gear from 15mph would be much quieter than a WOT run at 2nd. Especially on a Corvette, those things are loud as hell with the optional exhaust!

Again, my research indicates that in the beginning it used to be a simple solenoid arrangement and cutting the wire was the end of it... but in more recent iterations, it became a function controlled by the EEC, so cutting wires would result in a MIL. However, it wasn't that much harder to fix; a simple jumper harness solved it.

I too hope that that the skip-shift will be as easy to defeat in the GT as it is in the Corvette... otherwise we're gonna have some problems. I hack for fun, though, so I should eventually be able to figure something out. FWIW, I take delivery of my '11 GT on March 18th, 2011. God, I love the Exchange New Car Sales program. $41k MSRP car for $36k? Yes please!

They can tell you that? Is there a new system in place? Everyone who ordered a '10 was wondering where/when until suddenly the dealer called and said it's in. There were milestones they could look up (such as build date, train car) but no one knew when the car would actually be delivered.

Oh, and congrats!

Thanks! I've been a SHO guy all my life, but going from a 220hp FWD sedan to a 412hp RWD coupe is going to be... different.

As far as the delivery date goes, that's the requested delivery date. Who knows if it's actually going to get there then, but I wanted to give myself enough of a buffer between when I get back from Iraq and when I get the car. I should hope they'd be able to make it by next March.

I'm not going through a dealer for my car... I'm going through this. I consider it one of the top perks of being active duty. The experience is far more worth it than the price (which is also totally worth it)!

I'm getting:

401A
Kona Blue Metallic/Charcoal (w/grabber blue accents)
Comfort Package
Security Package
HID Lights
Glass Roof
Electronics Package (FordEngineer, you're gonna be my bestest buddy come next year!)
3.73 gears
Brembo Package

so... pretty much everything. It also comes with Lojack and a 7 year, 70,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty through ENCS. It's a heluva deal.

It's my "congrats for going IA" present.

hawkeye, you've made a great choice on the car, but why not get from the military sales? I got a few grand of my 2010 when i ordered it in iraq. You can always cancel your deal and go with this. The ordering the car is a great choice! I had lots of fun spending money on parts while sitting in the sand! Wishing you a safe trip and safe return!

Oh, and on topic.. that would suck... why do people act like its better to have less options? i skip shift like most people when i'm granny driving.. Does the dash tell you what gears are out so you don't accidently try and jam into one only to find it blocked? Seems you'd spend extra time in neutral.. bad place to sit for miliage.

Swaping in a TR-6060 from a GT500 (which would be stronger anyway) is one way to disable it.

I think this feature sucks hard. If I have a manual, I should be able to put it in any damn gear I want when ever I want. That's the whole point.

I'm wondering if you disable it, will it void the warranty on the transmision?
