I was referring to the spread between invoice and MSRP, rebates and dealer incentives/dealer cash excluded.

There's other factors at play, but I was just trying to give a rule of thumb.

When I research a car I want to buy I usually start at www.edmunds.com and price out a car with the options I want. I only use the invoice pricing column as I never pay more than invoice. The website also has a link you can click on to see the rebates that are currently available.

If you can get an X-Plan PIN from someone who works for Ford; use that as it guarantees invoice plus $100 and a low fixed amount for "dealer fees" - a real no-hassle buying experience! The X-Plan also allows you to use the rebates and sometimes special financing rates.

Talking Pricing Plans

When I bought my new '06 GT premium new in Aug. of '06 I used Ford's site to research inventory of all of the dealers in central Indiana. I knew I wanted Vista Blue so that narrowed my choices down to less than 6 cars and only 3 with dark charcoal leather. I made contact through the internet sales dept of the 3 dealers and the best price I got was a quote of invoice less the current$1500.00 rebate. I made an appointment to test drive the car and after doing so told him I would think about it. I let it slde a few days and he called me back wanting to sell the car. I offered his original deal less the 3%
($860.00 on my car) holdback that all domestic manufacturers have on cars sold in this country which is supposed to be a bonus to the dealer selling the car. Basically that was A plan pricing that Ford employees get except they get the national advertising off of that which was $312.00 on my car according to the invoice.
He took the offer to his sales manager and of course he turned it down. I told the salesman that he wasn't the only game in town and proceeded to leave. Before I could get to my car the sales manager caught me and wanted to know how they could sell the car to me. I told him that he had my offer and that was all I was going to pay as there were 2 more cars I wanted in the area and was willing to buy either one at my price. He reluctantly accepted my offer and I took delivery the next day. The numbers are as follows: Sticker was $29,365.00, invoice was $27,247.24 and the holdback was $860.00 bring my price down to $26,387.24 less the $1500.00 rebate = $24,887.24 I was very happy with my deal and it was considerably less than X-Plan which was $27,213.25 printed on the invoice.

I was able to use:

X-plan
$500 coupon from a Taurus brochure
$1000 off for... I dunno why, some Ford program the sales guy got me

I got my X-plan pin from a guy on the blueoval forum. If you look around, you can get an X-plan pin for free.
