My idea of $200-$300 was WAY off it appears. I was assuming they could just paint the stripes over the existing paint and be done with it quick and easy like.

Actually, thats almost exactly how my painter did mine (of the parts of the car that were already painted). He lightly sanded those areas, then striped, then another coat of clear. He explained to me the idea was to leave alone the 'factory' paint since he felt it typically holds up to wear and tear somewhat better than aftermarket paint (he said something about its hardness that most cant replicate outside of a factory). Is there any truth to that? No idea. But either way, I'm totally happy with the results.
Good luck and do your research. A good painter makes all the difference and IMO is worth the cost as well.
