It shouldn't be too hard, if it there are spots where you can't fit your finger between the mid-pipe and body then it is probably hitting.

How about raising the front fo the car up, turning the wheels to the left and spinning each tire? Atleast you could rule out something contacting the tires/brakes/shocks etc.

Next time it knocks... Ask; "Who's there?" That's all...

If the knocking sound only happens when the steering system is engaged, that pretty much rules out everything else. Either something is malfunctioning in the steering system, or the act of turning the wheels is causing something to malfunction.

Some things to check:

Ball joints for the front hub. If they are dry/worn they can make a squeaking/knocking sound when you rotate the hub.

Tie rod end ball joints. See above.

Strut mount bearings. They are what allow the strut assembly to rotate, and if they are dry / bound up, they will make an incessant chattering/knocking noise whenever you turn the wheel.

The infuriating thing is, if it is one of these things, they will not make noise with the suspension unloaded. I suggest putting the front wheels on dollies and turning them that way so the noise of the tires doesn't mask the noise you're hunting.

If I understood your problem correctly, then I had

Is it continuous knocking or just pops once?
Usually happens in 2's - like a quick "knock knock" - I have to be going left which makes me think it's steering related....mmmmm

Inner tie rod, outer tie rod, or both?

I'm not really sure because I took it to the local dealership
for warranty repair and they told me they replaced the tie
rods, and it fixed the problem, no popping noise after that.

But the way you describe yours as knocks that come in 2s
makes me doubt we have the same problem. Mine was just
one pop every time I turn the steering wheel.

Sounds like it could be a wheel bearing on that side. When you had it jacked up, and you rotate the wheel by hand, did it sound OK then? Bearings do not normally knock though, but maybe it is not loaded properly. Can you feel any looseness when you try to move the wheel? Grab it at 12 and 6 o'clock position, and then at 3 and 9 and see if it moves any. Good luck.

No sound when rotating on stands...but I haven't check for looseness when jacked up - will try that next. It does have 165k so who knows - wheel bearings have never been serviced.

With all the knowledge and experience on here I think this is going to get figured out.

thanks!!!
