Default Reverse

Might be a dumb question but...seems like car doesnt wanna shift into reverse( manual) every so often. I have to shift into a forward gear and then into reverse. Normal?

Mine does it too. Got worse after the short throw shifter and aftermarket clutch. I do the first to reverse shift.

Technically you're supposed to go into 2 forward gears, then reverse. I always do 3-4-R. As AmericanSpeed said, it became more of an issue after I put my MGW in.

My car does it in 1st as well, sometimes. I get a 'spongey' feeling in the shifter when I get into first, so I go to 2nd then back to first. But thats only on a cold start. For reverse, I figured out its 'easier' if you shift from 1st or 3rd then reverse.

I don't know if this has anything to so with what you guys are describing (I haven't had that happen yet) but there is a lockout built in that prevents you from going into reverse unless the shifter is to the left of 5/R first. So you at least need to have the shifter in the 3/neutral/4 position before reaching over for reverse...

They say the lockout is there to keep anyone from going from 5 to R. What, as if someone wouldn't know it's not a 6 speed? LOL!

^that's exactly what it is, the shifter is just over-sensitive sometimes. I'm glad its there though. I wouldn't ever find myself trying to shift to sixth, but better have the safety feature than risk risk having the tranny shoot out the bottom of my car in pieces

Yea mine would do that sometimes too but if I just pull hard into reverse right from the start every time it goes fine.

Let the clutch out, then push it back in, will go just fine then. There are no syncros for reverse, this is why you have this issue.

WHAAAT ? No wonder I kept F$#%ing up my tranny. I thought it was R from ROCKET . you know , supposed to go SUPERR fast..

jk.. old joke I knew..

I've had this happen to me soooo many times when I attempt to back into a parking spot. it pisses me off to no avail. But like the brute that I am, everything works with FORCE. So I jam the sucker in there and it goes in. Does it do damage ? Prolly. But when I get pissed off I lose any sense of rationality. lol I guess I have to do the 3 and 4th gear first from now on to make my life easier.
