Default Why do we mod?

Well, my sister and I got into a big of a tiff last night. I recently got an internship for the summer making some good money, so I planned on trying to satiate the mod bug. However, she and my Mom both agree that it's a waste to put money into a car that I'm just going to get rid of in 4-5 years.

Now, with that in mind, my sister finally asked why? Why spend the money? At the time, I really couldn't think of a logical response. Sure, a car is a horrible investment, monetarily. It's impossible to recoup the money one puts into a vehicle. Personally, this is my one and only hobby. I don't have kids to pay for, I've got a full-ride to college, so why not indulge myself in one of the few things I find pleasure in?

Now, this doesn't sound logical to anyone that doesn't share the same fervency, but maybe some of you guys can offer up a reasonable explanation as to why we put money into something that we'll never get back?

I am on my 4th car that I have modded.

1.Nissan Truck
2.Foxbody mustang
3.Ford Probe
4.current Mustang.

This weekend I may be buying a 95 Nissan truck to play with also. I can honestly say i took a 5 year break and tried other hobbies. Cant say any of them effect me like modding. The Pres of a car club I once ran with said its an Itch.. that never goes away.. I do it cause I enjoy it... and I never plan on getting rid of a car... Normal they die or someone kills them for me.

Does your sister wear make up? How many pairs of shoes does she have? Does she go to a tanning salon? The reason we mod is BECAUSE WE WANT TO. If YOU feel fine with it, it is your money. If it is your passion, then it is money well spent>

Why do we spend money on any hobby ? We generally are not getting our money back that we put into any of them, but you have to have something to keep yourself going besides work and chores. I have many hobbies that I spend a lot on - Photography, Audio Equipment, Woodworking tools, Guns...... If you have the money and it is not taking away from your necessities and you are still able to be responsible and save for retirement, then what the heck is wrong with it. You know what they say about all work and no play......

- It's a hobby
- Makes the car faster/look better
- Sense of accomplishment, if you do you own work

Simple as that

You said it yourself, "Personally, this is my one and only hobby. I don't have kids to pay for, I've got a full-ride to college, so why not indulge myself in one of the few things I find pleasure in?"

And like SLCustomsGTCS sig's say, "it's not just a hobby, it's a lifestyle" lol.

My wife still does not understand why I remove perfectly good parts... but because she knows this is my hobby, she is fine with it. My car is paid off and I always pay cash for my parts. Now if I was going into CC debt for my modding, then I am sure my wife would not be so supportive

As long as you have the money and are not going into debt with your modding, why not! There are worse things we all could be doing with our spare cash.
