Default $6500 to spend to rebuilt motor - How would you do it?

So it looks like the dealership, in lieu of my email to the owner/gm, might be stepping up and cutting me a check on Monday. If I add in there a little of my funds, I figure I'd start with a $6500 figure to rebuild the engine+ some. So, how would you do it? Keep in mind I/my dad/my friends would be doing the work. Lets also assume the heads are still good for now . . .

I was thinking B302 shortblock + stage 3 Saleen upgrade. I had thought about doing cams, but with the forged shortblock I should be able to do enough boost to get to the power levels I want, and I could take the money saved on cams and get the dual fuel pump setup.

*mods are welcome to change 'rebuilt' to 'rebuild' in the title.

Well, that's good news...
At least, you're getting some cash back.
Your idea of B302 block with the Saleen upgrade is good thinking.

I say go big or go home. I would find a big engine lol. MB even the 5.4 idk how much it cost though, so it's more of a fantasy xD

You have alot of options. I can tell you I did mine for $3200 using all new shortblock parts. This includes all gaskets, fasteners, seals, fluids, machining, etc. The thread is in my sig if you want to get a good idea of what's involved.

The easiest would be to buy an aluminator for $3200 shipped. Head gaskets, bolts, other gaskets, seals, etc will run you about $400. You could make alot of power with that block if you wanted to. I'd stay with the stock bore and stroke.

Let us know what you decide.

You'd go with an aluminator over brenspeeds new short block?
That was directed at BruceH

$6500 would get my shortblock and stock heads, no tranny. So, that's what I would buy.

I'd go with the B302 and FRPP ported heads. Build a good motor. You're probably never going to open it up again. You can add the external stuff later.

I would. My reasons would include the following: The aluminator uses Manley H-beams, Mahle pistons, and a Cobra crank. Ford is doing their own machining to their own tolerances. They have alot of experience assembling performance motors. The Mahle pistons are made out of 4032 aluminum which expands less than 2618 when brought up to operating temps, this means the piston to bore clearance can be made tighter for a quieter motor with less blowby. The downside to 4032 is it can't take detonation as well as 2618.

I'm not saying the Brenspeed block would be bad but if I was choosing a shortblock it would be the aluminator.

If I was having someone build it I think I'd contact HMS. That's just based on gut feel from some of the input Chris Haney has given on this forum. His website also shows the equipment and processes he uses when machining a block.
