So am I hearing correctly that the 4:10's aren't that big a deal on the S197's? I'm curious because that is on my list of future mods.

I love my 4.10's and I have a s197. There are lots of other s197 owners on here that swear by them too.

I have an auto, but it makes a world of a difference to me. I've had a club member tell me he was getting sick of driving 4.10's manual because 1-3 gear is so short, but it depends on what you want and what you're looking to do. The only thing that does worry me slightly is that it's a DD and cruising speeds of 65-70, I'm running around 3k RPM's. My drop is gas mileage is close to null so it doesn't concern me, just the extra wear lingers in the back of my mind.

I just had mine installed and then went on a road trip to houston (~4 hours). I didn't notice any significant drop in fuel economy. Obviously I'm at a higher RPM on the highway, but in real world mileage, it didn't make much difference. I don't really notice much difference shifting trough the gears either.

In fact im planning to put mines on in June/July!

Did you buy your gear set brand new from a reputable vendor? I was told by my installer once gear whine starts, it's not a guarantee they will go away since you are already wearing them in unless you get a new set. There are cases where you can actually get a defective gear/pinion cut too but that is extremely difficult to tell as explained to me. TBH, I get some minor decel gear whine, which most ppl can't seem to hear.. but if this drives you up the wall, you need to take it back to your installer and have them take a look at it.
no, i purchased them "used" from a forum member with advertised 400 miles on them. i couldnt even notice a pattern when i inspected themn and the installer thought they were brand new!!

So it would seem that after putting 200 miles on the new set of "used gears) there is MINIMAL whine up to 55 MPH. After 55 MPH, the whine becomes apparent and definitely noticeable; even more so on deceleration. The whine is louder (acceleration) the harder I go on the throttle (so far have only taken it to 80). I took my buddy for a ride tonight to gain his opinion and he also thinks that something is set up wrong out of spec. To him, the whine is "very loud" (I didn't think it was that loud but I have never had any experience with gear whine; he is also a Chevy guy; f/g-body) whereas I thought it was just a tad on the loud side.

Any new opinions given this new information?
Thanks a ton,

I have 410's in my auto and i love it. They are great and not much difference in fuel mileage. With that in mind i dont jump in my car everytime i drive and rip it. I like to get on it every now and then. Also someone was saying something about wear. So there is wear when u swap out gears in these cars. I guess i just never realized. What is it

whine on deceleration especial in that range, is usualy a improerly tightened race bearing. The spec on i is like 12-22 ft/lbs or something, but that is the rolling resistance. Most shops set the static to that and wonder why all there gears whine (or worse think its normal.) The static resistnace to start to crush the race is like 400 ft/lbs or something crazy like that.

The rear end more then likely has to be pulled back apart to just the pinion and carrige installed, then you use a torque wrench on the pinion nut, and the resistance it takes to keep the rear end turning, is where you measure your spec. The way i did mine was with a impact, even though your not supposed too.... you just have to be reall careful. Snug the nut up. Mark the flange and the nut. Hit it with the impact for 1/8th a turn. Check rolling resistance. Repeat till in range.

JD, what part of CT are you from and who/where was your install done? What gears are you running?
