the only reason i wanted to see if i could is cause my air filter looks really bad and i was gonna replace it with a regular k&n drop in but i saw that cone at autozone and remembered my friend was running a cone on his stock intake but his was a 04 whats the diffrence between mine and his since i cant do it
Just get a drop in filter from GreenFilters USA (much better than K&N) (and you can pretend like your going green)
(their thing is Green by way of less air restriction, and less trash to throw away)

Don't waste your money. Doing it as you described will cause you to run lean and throw a CEL unless the cone filter doesn't flow any more than the stock air box does. And if the later is the case, you won't gain a thing. Secondly, even a no-tune-required stand alone CAI made for your car will only gain you 3-5 RWHP whereas a good CAI & custom tune will gain you 20-25 RWHP or more.
Drop-in air filters don't do squat either.
Do it right the first time. CAI & tune.
