Default Tuner without CAI??

so like it says, has anyone had a tune without a CAI? If so is it a good idea, what are the gains? I have a guy who wants to sell is diablo tuner for 100 bucks to me but i have the stock intake on and wondered if that is a good idea...

A tune w/o a CAI is a bigger bang-for-the-buck than a stand-alone CAI (with NO tune). However, if you're going to use the canned tunes then you won't get the most out of what a good custom tune will get you. Regardless, a stand-alone tune is much better performance wise than a stand-alone CAI. Except the 2 were made for each other so I'd think twice. A CAI & tune combo from Brenspeed or AM is the best way to go. Why spend $25-30k on a car and then skimp on the mod that gets you the most performance short of going FI?

got my 08 gt tuned with a 93 octane tune from Bama and no CAI...theres no problem in doing this. the tuner gives it a really good boost in throttle response especially in lower rpm's (mine did anyways) also the higher rpm's aint too bad either.

A tuner for $100 isn't a bad deal.. but you have to make sure it's unlocked or you WILL have to pay to get it unlocked. Even if you do get just the tuner, you want to pick up a CAI with it, but in that case, you might as well just get a combo. Since then you would have to find someone that would write tunes for that specific hand held. In the end.. just go look at the Brenspeed or AM site first.

A few years ago 5.0 magazine tested the performance of several different CAI's with the same 91 octane modded tune on an S197 GT. The tune was installed first, and it alone added 10 hp. The aftermarket CAI's were then individually installed, and the best performing ones added another 14-17 hp, or 24-27 hp total.
CAI = Good bang-for-the-buck(IMHO)
