Default Covering your car

Does anyone out there cover their car outside? I'm thinking about covering my car at work since it's in the sun for so long but I'm worried about getting fine scratches in the paint. It can get very dusy where I am and very little thing shows up on the black paint. Is taking it off and on everyday going to scratch the paint? What should I do to prevent the paint and interior from fading? Thanks for the advise.

Default RE: Covering your car

I cover my car whenever it's parked outside for more than half an hour. I did the same thing for years with the Honda S2000 that I had before the Mustang. That car never had any scratches I could blame on the car cover.

You have to keep the car clean at all times if you're going to be using a cover. The Mustang is not going to see much rain so it's pretty easy to keep it clean enough. I'm using the official Ford Mustang cover that is not waterproof. It picks up dirt off of the tires way more than the cover I had from Honda. I never bothered washing the Honda cover in over five years of usage. I'll probably have to wash the Ford cover every six months or so.

As for avoiding scratches, I fold the cover into a two foot wide strip running front to back, then roll it up starting at the front and toss it into the trunk when I get to that end. As long as you're not sliding the cover over the painted surface, it's not likely to scratch the paint. Oh, and it works just fine with the top down, as long as my windows are up. A little more awkward to roll up, but no problem otherwise.

My goal is to have original unfaded paint ten years from now and beyond. Keeping the car covered or in the garage all the time makes it much easier to achieve.
