seach for the TSB list here and you will get a good idea, the 05's had a water leak issue that was bad for starters. not all had it though. tehy also had the plug design prone to break, which can be a pita if you need to change them.

Search the TSBs (technical service bulletins) to see the common problems. Most common problem that can cause some damage is the passenger side water leak

If the car is maintained well, they can go for a long time. A few members have 100k+ problem free

Edit: Beat me to it Shane

My manual 05 GT has experienced the following since 12/04:

-Bad OEM battery (Replaced after 2 years, subsequent to that I started manually turning off the stereo before turning off the ignition, replacement unit has been working fine)

-Defective fuel pump (Engine hesitated when accelerating after cruising at steady hwy. speeds for an extended period, car runs great with replacement pump)

-Sticking emergency brake cables (Replaced with new ones after 2 years, no problems since then)

-Water leak in trunk and in passenger footwell (Sealed up edge of rear window to fix trunk leak, passenger footwell still leaks as car was out of warranty and didn't want to pay big $$$ for dealer to fix it, cheaper workaround was installing protective polyethylene to cover the SJB(smart junction box) and placing paper towels under edge of kick panel to soak up the water drips)

-CD skipping in stereo(Never fixed as frequency of problem greatly diminished over time)

-Paint bubbling on front and underside of hood(Never fixed as car was out of warranty when I first noticed them and didn't want to pay big $$$ for repainting or replacing the hood, also the few affected areas are not that noticeable and paint appears to be stable, i.e., it does not rub off during washing and waxing)

i have an 05

I think the BIGGEST thing to consider is

1 = water leak. don't buy the car until you have stuck a garden hose flooding the windshield cowl area for at least 20 minutes and the car staying bone dry

2 = spark plugs. the wonderful cylinder heads + spark plugs will do their best to stay together and breaking them is a PITA

but if you can find a clean one for cheap, go for it

cheapest 300hp you can get !

honestly i've not had a problem out of mine. the plug problem even goes thru the 06yrs too. there are gonna be cars that have problems in all years so if the car is a good deal and you like it go for it!

Better off getting a 2006. Less problems, and possibly the insurance might be CHEAPER than a 05. When I bought my 2006 mustang gt the insurance I found out is higher for a 2005 model.

I think the leaky models were in 05/06. Thankfully my 06 purchased last Oct was NOT a leaker model! OP, no reason to rush into the purchase, lots of available cars out there, so do your research before you buy.

My '06 developed the wonderful water leak, not horrendous but it is there. I was going to go with a later model, '07-'09.
