Default Gauges, Gauges, Gauges!

Ok I already posted a topic on this, but I didn't get all the information I'm after. As some of you know, X-Charger #160 is on the way . Anyway, I don't want to spend much more money, but I need gauges. So, a couple of questions.

-What gauges do I need? I know a boost gauge, but what about a A/F ratio? I'm getting a tune from Doug which is going to be safe, so I thought maybe I don't need an A/F. I don't even know what my A/F should read.

-Should I get digital or analog? If analog, electrical or mechanical?

I just don't really know what I'm doing with this at all.

I went with boost, wideband AF (digital), and an AeroForce Interceptor.

The only thing I wish I could get is actual fuel rail pressure, but I don't see the need to spend $300 for some info that is only necessary when troubleshooting a problem. The Aeroforce Interceptor plugs into the OBD2 port and will report almost any valuable info you want. You can get it in a variety of colors to match your style of gauges. It will read delta pressure, which is fuel pressure + or - the vacuum/boost (should be around 40 at all times). It can also be used as a shift light.

The wideband AF gauge is nice, but only really necessary for seeing your WOT AF ratio. At any other time other than WOT, your O2 sensors trigger constant changes in AF ratio to stay as close to Stoich as possible, which means that the actual AF ratio will be in constant flux, and even if the tune is off, the computer will be trying to use short and long term fuel trims to keep the AF ratio as close to 14.7 as possible. When at wide open throttle, you are relying on the accuracy of the tune to determine your AF ratio, and it should never be above about 12.8 under boost (the more boost you get, the lower that target AF ratio). So realistically, the only time the gauge is useful is when going WOT and watching to make sure you aren't above 12.8. If the tune is right, you don't have to worry about it. Out of WOT, the gauge will be dancing all over, and it can be distracting. Too many variables are being processed and you are seeing the net result, which means very little if anything.

Boost is the same way - if the supercharger is doing what it is supposed to do, you don't need a boost gauge.

Gauges are a 2-edged sword. You get the feedback you need to determine that everything is working as intended, but you start to watch the gauges and make assumptions that are probably incorrect as soon as you see something that doesn't look right - even if the car is running perfectly fine. Just keep that in mind before getting any - treat them like a semi-useful appearance mod.

+1 on DKersten's comments as things like boost and AFs should not need monitoring if you have a good tune. But they are cool to watch

But I would just start with a single Aeroforce and go from there as you get to read all the basics initially, have a built-in shift light (along with all the other functionality of these gauges), and can add on sensors for things like AF and boost down the road.

Thanks for the post, that was very insightful. Taught me a lot. I am counting on Doug to provide a safe and effective tune, so I think everything will be fine. I guess a single Aeroforce would be a good idea to start with. Will it fit into the Rousch vent pod?

I know this was a V8 thread but should apply for both the V6 and V8:

WB A/F is a must with FI.
i also have a mechanical boost and electric FP. i like to keep an eye on the upgraded parts to make sure they are functioning properly.

although a good tune is important, that is one factor of the equation that amounts to the performance of your Mustang. your tune can be solid, but other factors can change that may set off how your car performs. gauges can alert you to a problem before it becomes a costly problem.
if you have money for a SC, it is a good idea to spend a few more $$$ to insure your costly investment doesnt blow up.

your a/f should read 14.7 @ idle and around 11.7 @ WOT.

Ok, I see you have an Auto-Meter mechanical boost. What kind of WB A/F gauge is that?

Are most gauges sold with the necessary sensors or are those additional?

And where can I get those tan gauge pods?

http://www.speedofsoundllc.com/

the gauge pod is SOS, you can get it at just about any website like brenspeed or lethalperformance or AM.
the A/F gauge is Innovate, it's pretty affordable for a WB. and the sensors usually come with the gauge.
although like others mentioned, you dont NEED gauges, but i think its a good investment, especially with FI.
