Default Cam install problem - Help Needed

I'm installing my hot rod cams and I'm having a problem with the LH side cam not fitting all the way into the phaser/sprocket assembly. I have taken it back out several times and it is just barely going in. I went ahead and torqued down the bearing caps and tried tightening down the phaser bolt being careful not to go over 30 ft lbs, and it did not pull it in at all. I then tried fitting the stock cam back in to see if it was a problem with the new cam, and it wouldn't go in either. I don't see anything wrong with the inside of the sprocket or the key that fits into the slot in the cam. Is this key made on the sprocket, or could it have gotten out of position somehow ? I sure don't want to take the phaser assembly apart.

And no, the chain did not slip on the sprocket - I had the chain wedge in the whole time and made marks on the chain and sprocket, and nothing has moved. The RH side went on fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

This might sound stupid... but have you taken any pics of the key or sprocket before this issue arrived? I don't see why you would have but IF you did you might be able to tell if anything looked different.

Also ... how much was the phaser bolt tightened before you notice the trouble? Or had you already tightened it down to the max before you had the problem with fitting the LH side?

I did not do my install myself. But I do remember reading something about the RH and LH being a little different.
Not SURE though.
Have you gone over the install guide on the forum to double check your steps and the details of what you have done?

P.S.
That camera takes damn nice pics.

it's hard to say if it's on far enough, but it looks very close based on this
pic of my LH side.

Yeah, I took lots of pictures during the install, but not of that specific area unfortunately. I have been using Hammeron's write up, but he didn't have a photo of that area either. I have actually talked to Hammeron on the phone, and we believe it is on correct - that it just go flush up against that lip like on the passenger side. The chain seems lines up perfectly, and in fact if it was in that much it would be hitting the VCT switch. Hammeron has been a life saver ! I think I'm good to go.

Good Luck! This is the kind of thing you run into the first time through on a new (to you) engine design.
