The ECU in the 2010 Mustang is more sophisticated than the unit in the 05-09 models, and it gives the midrange torque a little boost with 93 octane according to Ford's head drivetrain engineer. But peak power does not increase.

This....I know the 2010 om says that it will benefit from 93, but if its really not worth it I appreciate the input I'll stick to 87.

Best advice is to try it and see what you think. Nothing really lost on a couple tank fulls. $0.20/gallon x 13 gal is only $2.60 extra. If you don't notice any power difference or fuel economy increase, then go back to 87. Just my $0.02.

The owners manual for my 4.0 actually says not to run anything higher then 87 and that in doing so may cause pinging...

The 05-09 GT's do not have the same tune as the 10 with the exception of the Bullit. And yours is the V6; a totally different animal.

The Bullitt tune, with its ability to adapt to gas of different octanes, is going to screw up the whole "advice" given here! Prior to 2010 we've been telling everyone that just switching to a higher octane is a waste of $$$... Not with the new GTs.

Here in L.A. we don't have 93, just 91, so I can't see spending $.20 extra per gallon, unless I was racing and needed every possible advantage.

What I would like to know is if switching to a higher octane gas has given better MPG, performance, etc, and has anyone got data to back those claims up?

I have a 91 tune on mine, kinda hard to find 91 around Tampa. But sometimes I use 93, but mostly 87. No ping and I really don't know much of a difference. So for the most part with the 91 tune what should I be using??? As far as I know higher octane does not give you any more horsepower. It's a knock rating. Fuel is not like fuel when I firs started driving. Leaded regular was 93, and you can go as high as 102 right from the pump. It was called Sunoco 280. I guess I'm showing my age. I use to say, I'm not putting in that hi-test as we called it. It's 43 cents, too much. I'll stick with the regular for 29 cents. LOL
