Default question on not using ebrake

Does it hurt your car at all if you have a manual and do not use the ebrake? like parking on a hill and just leaving it in gear? Some people say it puts stress on the tranny while other people say there is more stress from just driving the car normally and it doesnt hurt anything at all.. what are your thoughts on it?

I don't think its a good idea. More pressure on trans trying to hold the weight of the car if it slips out of gear your liable. The e-brake should be used often to prevent the cables from sticking. I use the e-brake everytime I park fwiw

Depending on what your car hits when she lets loose, yeah, it'll hurt alright...

When I had my 92 GT, the ebrake didn't really work so I never used it. I had parallel parked on a hill and apparently my wheel was slightly turned out towards the street. I came out from the store about half hour later and my car was at a 45 degree angle across the road. I thought it was stolen at first because I didn't see it while walking down the street because of a van that was also parked on the side of the road.

Leaving it in gear wont hold it on a hill indefinitely. If the slope can overcome your engines compression, it'll roll.

I've never even heard of just keeping the car in gear and not using the e-brake. I was told back when I was learning to always keep the car in first when parking to "keep the transmission tight". Still sounds like a wives' tale, but I do it anyway just in case...

Well what keeps the car from rolling when you're in gear? I mean think about it. If you're driving, and the clutch is out, there isn't anything else you're doing to 'release' the car and make it roll. So if the clutch is out, and the car is off, other than the ebrake, what are you engaging to keep the car there? Nothing. So the only thing keeping the car in place when its in gear with the clutch out, is the compression of the engine and the cars rolling resistance. There have been many stories of people forgetting to put the ebrake on, and then finding their cars down the hill anywhere from a few feet, to many blocks.
