Default Help a newb - datalogging

Never done it before in my life. I have an X3 and a laptop ready to go. Deviceupdater and livelink are loaded on there.

Car has a KB 2.6L and is for the most part stock otherwise.

I understand I am to hook the laptop up to the tuner, plug the tuner into the ODB2 port, and then select which parameters I want to monitor with the X3.

What are the most important parameters I should be logging? Thanks

I am in the process of learning about this also. I have read to select the items in CAPs. Did you wire up your wideband too?

I have a AEM wideband but won't be logging AFR when I do this. I have to make a cable before I can do that. Kind of a PITA and not gonna screw with that until maybe next spring.

From what little I've read it seems like you don't have to hook the laptop up to the tuner while you are taking the log. You use the laptop to grab the log from the tuner when you're done.

Just not sure what parameters I need to make sure to monitor. Can you monitor knock retard with this? SCT doesn't have much documentation and I don't find a lot of threads on the net showing the specifics of this whole process.

Timing, RPM, injector duty cycle, Airflow the MAF is reading (usually in grams per second or lbs per minute).

Ideally you'd want AFR in there too.

Who is in your profile picture? That butt looks familiar . . .

Thanks for the suggestions. I will add those parameters in when I do the log tonight. Assuming anything that has to do with knock sensors should be added in there as well.

I found out while the X3 can take a log by itself you are probably better off having a laptop doing it while the X3 is acting as a pass-through. I will have my wife with me tonight and she'll be running the computer and the tuner for the most part while I drive the car. Going to try two logs. One will be just normal driving for about 3-5 minutes. Then I will take another log at WOT on the highway, pulling all the way through 4th gear from about 2000rpm up to redline.

Can't monitor AFRs with my aem wideband unless I build the cable to use the analog connection. Won't be done with that in time for the winter. This is a last minute thing because I'm getting ready to put the car into hibernation within the next few weeks...

Oh and the avatar is my wife.

Least you'll have something to keep you occupied in the winter while your car is in hibernation.

lol thanks guys.

Never logged before in my life this should be interesting. Wish I could do the wideband AFRs but I can't get the cable together in time and winter is getting close enough I don't care. Car will be parked by thanksgiving. I've got all winter long to make the cable I need.

just curious what does data logging tell you besides for data obviously
are you looking for problems with your car or is this to satisfy curiosity?

Yeah SCT's site is crap for giving info about data logging.
All it did was confuse my ***.

Best to talk to people who have done it themselves.
