Most GPS units of any caliber has a self contained battery and an
external power source is not needed.

That's true, issue is that those batteries don't last forever
and in my case, one of my main uses for it is 14 hour drives to and from NY.

Try This!
I have these installed in my cars. In the Stang it is wired to the map(GPS)lights. I have it nice and tucked in the headliner, and the plug is readily accessible as I mount my GPS in the upper left of my windshield out of the way.
