Default Have any good recommendations for a radar detector?

I've been so damn out of it for years I have no idea what works and what doesn't. Is there tech out there that can detect those laser/radar guns as well? Forgive my ignorance on this...

I got an Escort Redline a couple of months ago and it has saved me several times. It detects K, Ka, X and Laser. I got a ticket from a laser radar unit and that's what convinced me to get a radar dector. Some of the other ones have GPS and you can download camera sites etc, but the Redline has a very good range. Do some research and see what suits your situation.

Valentine One. Unsurpassed performance and very useful indicators show how many threats and from what direction. Wins almost every comparison test.

Escort Passport 9500i is the best thing out right now. The Valentine 1 may have slightly longer range in a few bands, but the 9500i already gives you a mile or two of advanced notice when the road is straight, and usually a half mile in the twisties. The 9500i has gps built into it, so it can tell you your speed, and most importantly you can mark false alarms. If you get the Valentine 1, it will go off every time you go past any shopping place with an automatic sliding door (CVS, Walmart, gas stations, ect). With the 9500i, it goes off the first time you pass them, but you hit a button on the gps and it never goes off again for that false alarm. Without the GPS, radar detectors get really annoying driving in the city. Spend the extra bucks and get the 9500i.

Great info on this site with links to the GOL test data. http://www.radardetector.net/forums/

You can't go wrong with Beltronics, Escort or V1. Also, checkout the Redline. FWIW, anything under $150-$175 is trash.

I run a Bel STI Driver with VEIL and laser shields fore and aft. I'm still considering active laser jamming.

You have to pay to play. A bare bones RD worth a darn is about $200 before any discount. If you want a few bells and whistles along with some of the best capability, expect to spend $400 on up. All it takes to convince most people is that one ticket that could have been prevented because someone skimped.

Of course, even the best RD can't prevent stupid.

Also, you have to be smart on how you speed...
Not only for safety reasons but you don't want to fall in the wolf's jaws.

If you're alone in traffic or in a gap (or on top of a hill), no freaking fancy detector will save your *** because the cop will turn his radar on at the last minute and your detector warning sound will be there to tell you that you just got BUSTED, lol.
I will say that they save you about 80% of the time in town but on open roads I don't trust them for the reasons mentioned above.

A jammer is cool but against the law I'm sure...

All the top tier radar detectors are worthwhile, but the directional indicators of the V1 are a very good feature and put it over the top. I don't know why the V1 gets a bad rap for false alerts, because I've never had that issue. The V1 isn't a pretty detector, and it doesn't give you all the (to me useless) band frequency information like some others or have pretty LED lights. In all honesty I think that's why it doesn't completely dominate the market. Trust me, the other RD makers are licking their chops for the patent to expire on the directional arrows.

For me it's the V1 hands down.

The problem with this strategy is the cops know where the falses are, and they hide in them. Once you tell the 9500 not to sing at a certain GPS coordinate, you're caught if there's traffic radar there. The V1 will show 2 threats in that situation. BTW, I don't get excessive falses from my V1 and I live in S. Florida, which is essentially one continuous strip mall interrupted by regular malls.
