Default Yet Another Hurst Short Throw Shifter Thread

Finally put in a short throw shifter. Went with the Hurst Billet,
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HUU-3915201/

Love the look and feel of the shifter, but it has the same rattle that everyone complains about from the non-billet version. It only happens in certain RPM ranges, but it is not bad enough for me to want to replace the shifter. Also, the directions are adequate, but the image quality really sucks. It was also funny that the directions make no mention of the shift stops.

Mine didnt come with the nuts for the bolts to the handle.had to go to Autozone for those. I didnt think the shift stops were needed. I didnt use them. What gear do you feel or hear the rattle in? I feel a little bit of something, but only in third gear, and when I push in the clutch it goes away. It doesnt happen all the time either. I took it to the dealer thinking it was the clutch, but they blew me off and said it was my "aftermarket shifter." When I asked why it doesnt happen when you push in the clutch the guy didnt know what to say. So I looked at him and said, "authorized Saleen/Roush dealer huh?".

Love my Hurst Billet, it's usually the first thing I get comments on cause of the looks, I love the short "clicky" shifts. It used to get a rattle sometimes, used some loctite (red) on the bolts that hold the upper stick to the bottom stick, (that fix came from a different thread), it did help but still get the occasional rattle (seems like it is the ball).

The rattle seems to be RPM dependent, does it in all gears. I am guessing some kind of mechanical resonance in the linkage results in the shifter shaking in the socket. Definitely not loose pieces both the ball and the handle are on tight, at least in my case. Only happens at a specific RPM in each gear, if I accelerate or decelerate the rattle goes away. Sounds and feels like it is down in the pivot point of the shifter. Not a huge annoyance, just something some folks might want to consider before they buy. Overall, I have been very happy with the shifter and I love the look and feel.

Mine rattled at first but doesn't anymore except for randomly at WOT near redline, weird. At one point someone on here suggested oiling it and that fixed the problem for them, I did that and it did seem to help. One day when I'm home and I remember I'll add some more.

to the OP!! take the (3) 1/4-20 allen head bolts out that bolts the two pieces together and then put some locktite on them. mine came all the way out and my shifter fell apart. the same thing happened to a friend of mine who liveS 4 miles from me but his bolts did not fall out on the road. he just lost all of his h pattern. i had to actually wedge my shifter forward close to it's actual position and managed to get 2nd and 4th. i called hurst but they really did nothing and they said it has never happened before. what B.S.!!!

Its hard to talk about oiling my shifter without laughing, especially after reading the dyno thread.
