Yep i do this to, and its easily proven. from my balcony i cant lcok it normally but then if i hold it up to my chin it works. I think they may have mentioned this on Mythbusters as well.

The keyfob is an omnidirectional antenna. That means that, perpendicular to the axis of the antenna, the radiated beam goes out in all directions. Your throat acts as a reflector of sorts for RF energy, forcing the beams going back towards your throat to bounce back in the direction of the car. It's not what I'd call an efficient reflector... I'd say maybe 20% of the beam actually gets relfected, but it's enough to give a functional range increase to the fob.
And don't worry, the fob doesn't put out near enough energy to cause any concern about irradiating yourself. It has maybe 1/50th the power of a cellphone.

I actually have never experienced a real problem in range. As a matter of fact the key successfully locked/unlocked my car one evening from the 3rd floor of my dorm. With the car parked on the other side of the parking lot.
