Default gas tank filling problem, '06 GT - cause?

Hey all,
Got my '06 GT last week, and went to fill it up today. After about the first gallon, it stopped pumping like it was full. So I pull out the pump, let it breath for maybe 10 or 15 seconds, and then it filled up the rest of the way just fine. I've read about similar problems with the 2005 models. Does anyone know what the cause of this is? Is it just a poor design for the fuel inlet, or is there something more invasive wrong? It wasn't a big problem, but since I've heard others talk about it, I figured I'd ask to see if anyone ever found out exactly what the cause was.

David

Actually if you get under your car and look at the size of the hose running from your gas door to the tank, you'll laugh! It like a 3/4" heater hose. The only problem I'm having is trying to pay for my gas..[:@]

All you need to do is turn the nozzle upside down and it will fillup fine.
Do that for a while, or for several fillups, and then try it filling it normally. If it does it again, turn the nozzle upside down. Keep doing this until it eventually goes away.
The same thing happened with my 350Z, when I first got it.
I did the upside down nozzle fillup and, after a while, it went away.

I read about all the problems so I just didn't use the highest setting on the nozzle and I've never had this problem. One problem I did have though was after the nozzle clicks off, most cars will allow you to get more in. If you try that on these cars it burps gas all over the side of the car. I only did this once. Gas = BAD for paint. GOOD for motor!

I don't turn the nozzle upside down. I find that it works if I hold the nozzle at about the 4:30 position. Bugs me a little that we can't use the fill lock so we can move aroujnd while filling, but, the drive is worth it!

I've had the gas-tank filling up issue once.

I had the issue at one pump, so I went to another pump at the same station and it worked just fine. Go figure

The 05's had this same issue when they first came out. They corrected it about half way through the production year. There was a TSB issued on this for the 05.

yes, it's a flaw in the design of the venting for the tank. Try it at an old style pump withou the big plastic nozzle cover and it could work normally, otherwise try it at different o'clock positions. Upside down is overkill!
I am disappointed in Ford for STILL not fixing the problem!
But I have heard that there is a screen in there somewhere to keep people from siphoning out your now very valuable gasoline!

A guy I met that had his tank replaced told me he saw the tank when it was out- has a 'tunnel' where driveshaft goes thru? said they told him the hump caused air to get trapped or something like that, so later tanks had slightly different shape to help prevent the problem...thats what I heard anyway...
