Default What does "skip shift" do exactly?

I have a 2012 GT stick and it almost always lights up when I drive. I been trying to save gas lately so I don't press the accelerator down very much. The manual says that when it is lit 2nd and 3rd is locked out, however I have NOT had a problem shifting into 2nd when the skip shift light is on. How come I am still able to shift into 2nd and 3rd from 1st even when the light is on? I mean this is a good thing but was just wondering why

It's a sign, that manual transmissions are made to go through all the gears!!
Sounds like you may have a problem with it if the light is coming on but no lockout. Consider yourself lucky, I definitely wouldn't have THAT fixed. You can still get excellent mileage if you drive easy, but that's no fun.

I would get it checked out to ensure the lockout solenoid is properly functioning. Don't want it to start locking you out of gears when you DON'T want it to. Fix it and then disable it if you want. But def fix it first since it's free.

Hi Will3212,

I agree with siggyfreud in having it checked out just to make sure everything is functioning correctly. If there is an issue, bringing it to the dealer helps ensure that it is documented and corrected in the future. And if everything is fine, then you can drive confidently while still saving on gas. Please PM me your VIN, contact info, mileage, and dealer and I can try to assist.

Skip Sift has GOT to be the most retarded thing devised by man.
Unplug the solenoid from the trans and never worry about it again.

are you sure what I'm experiencing is not normal? I been reading this other forum and this is what a user said
"After driving mine for a month, I have noticed something. I do not think this skip-shift feature actually makes you shift into 4th. I have shifted into 2nd several times with the message on the display with no problems. BUT... I have noticed that this tranny likes to go from 1->4 on its own. What I mean is if I simply pull straight back on the stick, it will go slightly right and into 4th, message or no message. To get to second I have to pull back and to the left when shifting. Even if I do that, it still feels like there is some resistance when I shift into 2nd. Kind of like the car wants to go from 1->4. BTW, I feel the same with 5->6 shift. I have to pull back and to the right to go to 6th, otherwise it wants to go back to 4th. Anyone else concur? " 6 other people agreed with him. this is the link

Skip shift works and it does force you into 4th. It is just a very small window as to when it happens. You really have to granny drive it, normally in slow traffic and making a corner. I believe the actual shift must be completed while the light is on. It takes some to make it happen on purpose but when it happens....it really sucks. After a few happenings on mine, it was on the lift and unplugged. I played with it once I got the info on its exact parameters and it does keep you from 2 & 3 without fail..but is easy to avoid it under most driving.

I heard you can just shift to N from 1st and then to 2nd to over ride the skip shift, NOT 1st to 2nd but 1st to N to 2nd. has anyone tried this? this is what I been doing ever since I got the car and going to 2nd from 1st has never been a problem for me light or no light. I don't think it's just me and that my skip shift is broken because people another forum (the link i posted above) have experienced the same thing. They were actually the ones who told me to do this in order to over ride skip shift. Anyone else here notice this?

ok I just went to drive my mustang around the block a few times and yeah you're right it does lock you out but ONLY when you go from 1st directly into 2nd. If you go to N from 1st THEN shift into 2nd it doesn't lock you out even with the light on. I also noticed once you go to N from 1st the light goes away. Can anyone confirm this?
