Default Engine Oil Change Needed warning implications

My new 2011 GT 5.0 has 5120 miles - purchased March 2011. The message related to 'oil change needed soon' came on shortly after 5000 miles. It now says the an "engine oil change is required."

According to the driving conditions as described in the 2011 Ford owner's manual, I should not need a change until 7,500 - 10,000 miles.

What's up with this? Can they void my warranty if I don't take it in? I know there are "algorithims" and such built in to the car's calculation of this but... How accurate are they?

I am very conservative but feel I can reasonably go another 1000 - 2000 miles based on what I have read. This is a big deal for me because of my job. I will change the oil if I have to but want to make sure it is required.

Any experience/feedback on these warnings/reminders?

Thank you.

Being that its your first fill of oil and you broke the car in with it, I'd say you should just dump it and fill with either more stock type oil or step up to something a little better that will give you more mileage.

I'd agree with you if you weren't on your first oil fill though, stock blend should be changed at about 7000 mile intervals or one year.

You won't have any warranty problems if you don't, you can press the reset button on the oil life monitor and the message will disappear haha.

There's a TSB for the 5.0L OLM, to revise the 5K interval with 10K.

Are you saying it is a big deal because you don't have time or not alot of money?
If you don't have time have someone else do it. If it's a money issue, what are you doing with a new Mustang? Buy an old Pinto!

Toss a coin. If it bothers you and you find the time, do an oil change. Otherwise, reset the indicator and forget about it.

+1, first oil change at 500 miles then 2000, after that, every 4-5K with the semi-syn.

My 09 Dodge Ram does that everytime. It has 9000 miles on it and the change oil message comes on every 2500 miles. I just ignore it or reset it. I think its a stupid ploy to get people to come in for oil changes more often so they can get your money
