First....how are you getting "power" from the neg. wire for LED's?

If the power/center button of the acc. plug is bad, then you need to remove the acc. plug to examine the actual center pin. I have seen these melt into the back of the unit and not function.

Have you used a meter to verify that there is no power in the plug? Also check power in the wire from the back side.

If you take shortcuts in wiring even for LED's, it is still a loose 12 volt connection that can come loose and short out or just be a loose fit and cause heat due to resistance. Either can be serious problems.
