The official "WTF is wrong with a Time Lord's Type40" CAI/Tune thread:
Guess right and you get a free jelly-baby, perhaps two, as I'm generous that way..
I've so far bugged Nuke in PM's occasionally about this, and have posted in odd threads here and there over the course of several months. It's been going on since I upgraded to a JLT CAI and tune. Now this is one of, if not THE most popular CAI and tune combo, and most usually have no issue. That said..
At about 4200+ RPM range I get a fist full of marbles sound (pinging), so I assume it's running lean.
These are the steps so far I've taken to try to remedy the situation:
1. No codes thrown, ever.
2. Replaced MAF.
3. Changed Fuel filter.
4. Cleaned the TB multiple times now, last time a few days ago, spotless.
5. Ordered a replacement filter in case I damaged the JLT one somehow, from AMSoil, completely same specs (4x9), works great.
6. Checked, re-checked, and redid all clamps to make sure there is no way any air is getting in save from the filter.
7. Adjusted tune to give more fuel on WOT, still same result, think I went as far as 8.0 with the WOT adjustment setting.
No problems at idle at all, no fluctuations, steady at 760-780rpms even with new AMSoil filter. Only at WOT past 4200rpms does this lean condition become apparent.
Since it is kickin' hot out, my intake temp is around 150F at idle today, and only makes it down to 122F once rolling, so perhaps I should have put placement of the CAI housing as a possibility? I dunno. All I do know is it's annoying the crap out of me. Anything plausible to help would be appreciated.

Pinging is NOT good.
You need to
1. Make sure you're putting the right grade fuel in.
2. Get that tune redone. Try a different person to tune it.
3. If all fails take that bitch to the shop to get looked at asap.

Is it under heavy load, light load or both?
Have you discussed this with the tech boyz at AM? If it's not the tune then it's something either mechanical or a bad sensor. Or maybe it IS marbles...

Heavy, only gunning it at WOT produces this. Under usual driving conditions, I'd of course never get close to that RPM range.
And just hanging it there it's fine until gunned again.
Aye. I've had it re-done before after speaking with them. I think this is something chronic with the car itself, as I had to have a previous tune of theirs for my previous crappier CAI adjusted for this problem as I recall.
It's only under that specific condition that it does this. I seriously doubt, even with my very very limited mechanical knowledge that this will cause any damage.
1. Done, forgot to list this. I've changed stations and even changed the fuel supplier that I normally go with. No change. 93 octane used with 93 octane race tune.
The suggestion was made in a previous thread to just keep pumping in 93, but get a 91 tune, as it's possibly just crappy gas. I would think this would occur across the board if that were the case though, and I don't just wish to mask this over. I would like to fix whatever the underlying cause is, ultimately.

Results:
1. Canned tune = fine
2. Performance custom Bama tune = fine
3. Race custom Bama tune = marble-city. Slightly less with 4.0 WOT ratio setting adjusted, but still nearly as noticeable.

So I assume this points completely at the tune itself.
I'm just not getting why it'd work fine for so many others and the race tune in particular is the only one not quite cuttin' it for my car.
