2 original or 2 working keys required to selfprogram 3rd key??

i think this is pretty damn stupid, if I had 2 keys I wouldn't need a 3rd! When I bought my stang I got one ****ing key, so by these standards I have to shell out a **** load of money to get a second one. that i already should be entitled to when I bought the damn thing.

You must have bought the Mustang used - and they just didn't give you the second key. Should have asked them to provide one when you did the deal.
The reason for needing two keys to program a third (or up to 7 I think it is) is so that it is difficult for someone to simply make a key and take the car; a security issue. If you valet the car for example you give them one key. The valet can't simply take that key, make another key from it, take note of your address, then give that to his buddy who comes out that evening and drives your car away.

[QUOTE=157dB;7641715]2 'programmed' keys...
Not 2 'original' keys.
The 'chips' in the keys are not 'programmed'.
They are read digitally and the digital info or 'serial #'
is recognised and stored in the PCM making the keys
'chip' a valid starting key.
BTW
If the dealer programs the first (lost both keys) or the second key
(lost only one key), the lost keys become unoperational except
mechanically for the door and trunk lock. Ignition will turn but
the stang will not start.
Dealer wipes all programmed keys when he programs any keys.
First or second.

Key Programming — Additional Key With One Programmed Key
NOTE: This procedure is used when a customer needs to have an additional key programmed into the vehicle without erasing stored key codes, but does not have 2 programmed keys available. This procedure is also useful when attempting to determine if an ignition key is defective, as a new key can be installed without erasing keys or without having 2 programmed keys available.
the only way to program another key with just 1 key is by plugging it in to the Worldwide Diagnostic System computer and reprogramming, this way it will not erase the code to your hidden key.
how do i keep my current key and get a new key. what do i ask for, and does it cost more, and will i still be able to program a third key by myself after?
thanks for the responses

Dealer and take your one key with you ( ).
Its included in the cost.
The dealer is just a phone call away for the details and costs involved.
They will program your key and a new one.
They its eBay to buy all the cheap keys you want
(up to 8, i believe) and go to town programming them
in the driveway...
