Default Launching question(s)

Hey Guys,

I've been on this forum for a while, i should actually know better about what i'm about to ask, but it only occurred to me to ask just now..

At what is the max RPM level at which you can launch an automatic without starting to do a burned out while staging? Does it differ what wheels/tires your car has?

My question isn't about the suggested RPM to launch your car, but just the maximum you can launch it with your stock torque converter.

I've trying it out for myself but i would like to hear some of your experiences..
I usually launch at 2500RPM... and i think i could keep the tires from rotating until 2800??
They might've been rotating already i'm not sure.

Also, does it make a difference if your o/d is off during a dragrace? And does shifting the automatic manually help at all? I've tried these also and in my experience the differences are insignificant

With my 07 Gt I used to launch really low like 1500-2000 rpm otherwise I would just sit there and spin. It was on stock tires. I'm sure with stickier tires or drags you could prob. launch at 4-5k. I wouldn't go past 6500 rpm. Good luck.

Always turn off O/D. Just leave it in auto and don't try to shift it yourself.

To be honest what I've learned with launching autos whether it's trucks or cars... I never launched that high of a rpm.. I usually come to a stop and hold the hold the brake just before it rolls and press the gas till the car wants to inch forward it's usually 12-1700 rpms.. Holding the brake down that hard loads the brakes lines and makes the calipers squeeze really hard so when you let they're still dragging so it keeps the car sluggish that's my exerience

4-5K seems really high, when i hold the brakes and go above 3000rpm it turns into a burnout. i think i would need a new stall for that

1500-1700 is a bit too low for me, i have a set of shelby take off wheels (285's) and they seem to be able to put it down if you stay beneath 2600rpm...

Uh...... I think the stock stall converter is at 2200rpm. Anything higher will probably spin the tires. So launch at about 2200.....
