why not just upshift from 1st while on your way up to that speed?
You will feel the difference in both sound AND performance.

and followed by a drop in mpg!

i do the same thing OP. I hope it doesnt hurt the car! I see no reason why it should, as long as you dont hold the revs at maximum RPM

Well, it may not hurt it, but I can tell you it won't make it any better. This is one of those things that the only way is down.... No upside at all

I like shifting down to 3rd when I want resistance to provide better braking on a sudden stop and sometimes when merging on the interstate. I do it at about 40-45mph and it does sound wicked good there. If you don't have your a/t tuned, I would recommend it. Makes the shift points much more firm along with running the gears longer for better proformance in everyday driving situations. My current brenspeed tune has been tweeked so that the o/d will not engage until 60+mph no matter the throttle input. Makes driving around town alot more fun and saves the transmission from constantly shifting in and out of o/d.

manu-shifting an auto won't hurt it as long as you don't neutral drop it (Rev the engine up in neutral and drop it into 'D'.

I used to manu-shift all the time until I got a Bama tune that firms up the shifts and such. I hardly ever have to manu-shift now as most of the tranny slop and slow shifting is gone.

I actually use the 1-2-3-D (od off) when driving around town. Never caused any problems yet.
