absolutely needed. It's pretty much your "battery" from my understanding, could be wrong though.

your lights hook up to the ballasts and the ballasts hook up to a power source (meaing batt or factory headlight wiring)

def needed, you probably shoulda done some more research before ordering those

I agree, the ballasts should match the bulbs. Also, some units need an igintor and a ballast, some have a built in ignitor. And you need to know if you have bulbs made for a 35 or 50 watt ballast.

If I could make a STRONG suggestion, sell the bulbs and get yourself a nice kit from like retro solutions or something. It will save you a lot of aggregation.

The ballasts are definitely needed. I could be wrong on the reason but I think without them your lights won't even turn on. I think the HIDs draw a different amount of power than your stock light bulbs and so the ballasts are needed for the energy conversion. As well as preventing too much draw or too little. Make sure that whatever you buy, there is a fuse in the line somewhere incase of a surge. You won't want to damage a $100 part when it could have been avoided by simply adding a 0.30 cent piece.

I completely agree with Son of 68. Retro-solutions have great kits that come with everything you need. (bulbs, ballasts, wiring harness, integrated fuse, and instructions) And they they are reasonably priced. They are highly used and respected on the mustang forum.

Their customer service is good too. There were a few issues with mine and they replaced the parts that was faulty and help with installation over the phone. Quick shipping too.

In case you don't want to use them, VenomousStangz (or HIDGUY - they are the same place) is also another site I like. I have bought other aftermarket parts from them and I have no issues. I bought my LED switchback turn-signals from them. One of the light bulbs didn't work on arrival, I called them up and I had a new one two days later.

Yes, they do use different power. Low current high voltage. Some can be as high as 20-30 kV. Something you really don't want to play with, or be incorrect about. The ballasts are critical and shouldn't be a make shift mod.

Could the ballast be for the CCFL halo rings and not the actual headlights? Have you taken possession of them yet or are they being mailed to you?
