Default Replace 2012 base steering wheel with 2007 leather steering wheel

Has anyone replaced their 2011 or 2012 base steering wheel with a leather and silver wheel from a 2005+ Mustang? Can you explain if you had to swap out the cruise switches to get the proper connections for the 2012?

I've never seen that swap done, but know that a 2010-12 put onto a 05-09 has been done.

Hi bigcanoe,
The answer is yes...you will have to swap button harnesses...I plan to do the same thing soon...hey, where'd you get the steering wheel?

Ok, I guess I have to take apart the wheel. I did get the buttons out, that part was easy, but the wiring seems to run behind part of the wheel inside.

I got the wheel from a forum member.

Hmm, I just looked at my stock rubber wheel. It doesnt look to come apart for easy removal of the switches like the leather wheel does. I might have to rethink this project, I was hoping I could go back to the rubber wheel if need be, but this would be a one way trip as I would have to cut the button panels out.

What? This is a bummer!!! From my understanding, the controls are wedged into the rubber pretty good...so you'll need to use some force to pop them out..."put a small flat screwdriver under the centermost end of the switch assembly (as you're loooking at the wheel) and pry out of the steering wheel."

It makes sense they would be replaceable. So maybe they do pop out and I wont have to cut them

The 05-09 steering wheels have the two screws on either side of the wheel, and one center bolt that gets torqued down to about 41ft. lbs.

The old ones also have 2 wires leading into the airbag assembly, and one clip wire for the cruise control. Assuming the harnesses for these are the same in the 2011+ (which I doubt they are) then it would be a direct swap.

For you 2011+ owners, here is a guide to changing the 05-09 wheels below, I recommend looking at the pics to tell if your wiring harnesses are the same or if they need to be swapped out.

Here is the link mentioned above: https://mustangforums.com/forum/2005...-for-s197.html

NOTE: I am told these bolts are torqued down to a level of "deformation" or something like that, if you want to be extra safe/precautions, I would suggest you get new bolts to go with the steering wheel swap as the old bolts might be slightly warped.
