I was going to get me a used Z06 when I retire (June 2014) and maybe beef the New Edge up a bit for wknd racing but after seeing this ride.. My mind may be changing!

Motor Trend will probably make all kinds of excesses why the Camaro lost but how it's still on the same level as the new GT500.

The ZL1 is an amazing achievement. The fact that it can turn into fast/broad corners and fast/semi tight corners faster than the Boss302 LS is incredible for a 4100 lb car.

I was just at my performance shop today, picking up my 06' from having some fuel efficiency adjusted into my tune, and the owner, Don Walsh, had his new Boss302 there in the shop next to my car. He said after having each generation of Mustang fit out for speed in the last 25 years, including trading in his 2011 Mustang GT, he says this 2012 Boss 302 he bought is the smoothest riding, lightest most nimble, perfect steering feel, fastest most accurate feeling Mustang he has ever driven. That includes all the cars he's had and test driven in his shop all these years.

So for the driver in the Motor Trend article on the ZL1 vs Boss 302 LS to say that the Boss felt more basic and less in control and much less comfortable, even though it gripped well on smoother pavement, is really a testament for how well the ZL1 must drive and feel at the same time setting a super car time at the Nurburgring and still weighing 4100 lbs.

This is to take nothing away from the Boss. For what it just emerged from it has incredible grip, and for the width of tires Ford has limited it to, it's cornering speed is pushed to the limit for the present chassis technology I'm guessing.

The 2013 GT500, if we're lucky, beyond it's 650HP, real launch control, real traction control, better differential, taller gears, will still be able to match at 3850 lbs, and with 265 rubber up front/285 rear, be able to match the Boss 302 LG in the turns, much less the ZL1 with it's uber advanced chassis and suspension technology.

No question about the power of the 2013 GT500, I'm just waiting to see how well SVT was able to strike a harmony between power, handling and braking for max efficiency on a road course against the ZL1. We'll see. Erik

If you're single, you can probally still join the service, serve one tour in Afghanistan and come back with a 2013 GT500 (just joking). Man, at times I wished I would have waited a few months longer before my purchase last November. Oh well.....

Damn nice looking car, great skin and all. Even more impressive drivetrain.

I wonder when they are gonna stop farting around and run the damn thing? I really want to see what 650 BHP crank can do, most of us dream of having that kind of power modded, but this bad boy comes with it stock!

The obstacle I see is being able to put that power to the pavement with only 285mm width of tires.
The launch assistance will be very taxed on applying just the right amount of throttle to tame that kind of power so the wheels dont slip.

Another thing I discovered: a car mag did an interview with the actual Ford engineers who designed the 5.8L for project Trinity.
And to my disappointment, the 5.8L does not have a 7000 RPM redline that another on-line car mag claimed. The correct redline is 6250 RPM with the ability to over-rev to 7000 RPM for those bad downshifts.

I am not mad that the true redline is only 6250 RPM, I am pissed at the on-line source that lied and said the RPM was 7000.

And quite actually, I am impressed that the 5.8L Trinity still pulls 650 BHP crank at only 6250 RPM!
If it could rev to a 7000 RPM redline, its BHP would be way higher, well above 700 BHP crank and that is assuming it only holds onto 550 ft-lbf up there!
Doing a quick calculation, if the Trinity engine only held onto 500ft-lbf crank at 7000RPM, its BHP would still be more, around 670 BHP!

I am daydreaming here, 650 BHP at the 6250RPM redline is still crazy power and the ZL1 will have to contend with that.

I would not doubt that at all. The modulars have so much potential in them that even the Coyote 5.0 base block can take over 600 BHP crank (well, you have to upgrade the rotating assembly and pistons with true forged).

This new 5.8L Tirinity I bet can easily hit 700 BHP crank with just a tune. If not 700 BHP, damn near close to it.
And as for the block itself, I have no doubts that it can take 1000 BHP crank.
Modders have already twin-turboed on top of supercharging to get the 5.4L Condors to push 1000 HP at the Wheels!
