2005-2014 Mustangs Discussions on the latest S197 model Mustangs from Ford.

Is it ok that a Ford dealer just changed the oil in my GT with 5W-50?

I feel like I read about them using heavier oil in the transmission to fix the inconsistant shifting issues, but that could be completely unrelated. Could be the lack of the oil jets.

Why the f*** does it matter what Ford said for the 2013 Mustangs? Is your vehicle a 2013 Mustang?

No?

The dealer should use what is recommended for YOUR car, not the next model year up. If a TSB comes out saying "Use 5w-50 for all 2011-2012 Mustangs", then that's great, but until then, I'd use 5w-20, which is what the manual recommends.

ford obviously changed this for a reason. it might be a good thing.
Did you read this somewhere?

Not sure why they would do that. I would put what Ford has stamped on your car. No reason to change if that is what their research points out to use. If something goes wrong and it can be pointed to the oil, then its on your head. What does your invoice or work order show they charged for and used in your car?

+1. Your warranty is from Ford Motor Company, not from the dealer. If you have an engine issue and FoMoCo can show it was because of using a weight of oil that was not recommended, good luck.

For the last two posters, are you saying that if we take our car into a Ford dealer and they change the oil and put in the wrong grade we will be responsible for any damage?

It's certainly possible, particularly if you watched the tech put in a weight of oil that you knew was not recommended. You might have a claim against the dealership--if they are still in business.

Quit making a big deal about it. Call the dealership, tell the manager that the tech put the wrong oil in and make them change it to the right oil. It probably won't cause a problem, but why take the chance? Besides, I am not going to believe some tech who gets paid 10 bucks an hour to remove a few caps, pour some liquid into a hole, and pull a stick out to make sure it isnt past a hash mark. He's not an engineer and neither is any of those people who work in that dealership so until they can show a directive from corporate telling them to put 50 weight in, you put what the manual says.

Ok.. I called the dealer today and talked to the service advisor about it. She had to talk to the service manager and when she called me back she apologized and said that they had made a mistake putting the 5W-50 in the car.. The best they could figure is that they used the oil for the 5.4.

I'm going back in tomorrow and they're going to change the oil out to 5W-20 for me.
