Did you check the fuse?
There is a low pressure switch that will kill the A/C if it becomes low on coolant, thus preventing damage. The plug is normally on the hoses or dryer in the right rear corner of the engine compartment. I have jumped the two pins to check and see if the compressor works. If it does, you may just need coolant added. You can buy a can at local parts stores.
If low, you might have a leak and need more than just filling.
