Default S197 Rust ?

I just detailed my 05 Mustang V6 the other weekend, and noticed that I had just a pen tip size rust bubble forming in the rear wheel well lip (I think passenger side). I am not a happy camper!

Car is in great shape otherwise and its still being paid for. I am NOT interested in letting it continue to bloom into something bigger. We put the car away for the winter, and I am a detail nut!

Since we bought the car used, it seemed to be in very good shape at the time (last year - 60k miles when bought). It still is in good shape for the age of the car (interior and exterior).

Any suggestions ? Others with similar issues ? How much ballpark to get fixed ? Had the hood repaired when we bought it (hood corrosion), and yes they sanded it down to bare metal, not some cheap fix. I know that not blending the colors sometimes results in a less than desirable appearance, but honestly ours looks just fine.

Is the bubble forming under the clearcoat? The only way I could think it would rust like that if there was a chip in that area that got through primer down to metal.

Yes, possibly. It is a rust bubble, with rust forming under the paint and bubbling. I saw a place where it possibly started (on the lip), but I am not a body expert.

My dad's 05 Ford 500 has several bubbles, and they have popped and leak a rusty red trail on the paint. He sanded, primed and painted the area and its actually worse. I stuck my finger in the wheel well and its rotting from the inside to the outside of the car.

Get it a good body shop. They'll need to strip it down. They don't call 'em Rustangs for nothing. And you're in a bad area for rust, too.

I think the only thing to do is carefully sand the affected area, mask it off, and primer/paint as best as possible. It may look odd but atleast it is inside the wheel well and not on a more visible area.

I have rust starting on the bottom of the drivers side door!

yeah i've had that happen on almost every Ford I've owned - I apply wax in late late fall, and do not take it off.

I hate rust, I feel your pain. I have a pin sized bubble on my roof. I believe the previous owner of my car used a car cover outside that wasnt waterproof and it trapped moisture under it to promote this spot. Sucks....
