To reduce noise mainly. I can tell a real difference when I don't have it on and then put it on the car. But taking it off doesn't do anything negative, just more engine noise can be heard. I left it off for a couple of years, and with the new hood put it back on last month.

And before anyone says it, the hood insulation has nothing to do with fire suppression. It is there to reduce noise only.

I'd worry about removing it currently for mine. Not for suppression, but if you've done some aftermarket audio wiring, more than likely you got cheap like I did, and didn't put on extra terminal connections, and that plastic flap isn't exactly covering the positive terminal completely anymore..

So long as it's strapped down correctly, no biggie, but I do feel a bit better with something non-conductive between it. Optima terminals get a bit too close for my liking..

I was about to ask, lol. I have heard so many people say it. . I was going to take mine off the other day, but didn't because of the "fire suppressant." Noise reduction is a good enough reason too, though. I like it quiet on the highway.
