I had to do this very same thing. The plastic pieces are real junk. I thought I was the only one having the problem. My trunk light connector was not hooked up and could not figure why the trunk was so dark. When I removed the plastic retainers discovered that they must be a one time use item.

Auto stores carry of course, I got a big *** pack of these for replacing crappy OEM bolts and such. "cap screws"
http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/9276691/ Specifically for this and other applications referred to as "M6 1.0 x 16mm" cap screws. 16mm should work fine with that size fastener, but 12mm would definitely let you thread completely.

Handy for replacing a bunch of the other bolts and standard DIN parts. Used the above to redo a few of the grounds along with new ring connectors. Especially the PCM specific 2 on the same bolt. Sad how crappy they're done off the line.

Problem is you don't want to thread all the way the 1/4 inch coupling butts right up agaoints the back of the whole so the bolt can tighten all the way just get a 1/4 inch coupliong and thread til it stops and just get like an inch long quarter inch hex head bolt and a trim washer and your good to go
