For a 2005, your Ford manual probably specifies Mercon for the power steering and Mercon V for the automatic transmission. Since Mercon is no longer manufactured, you need to go with Mercon V.

I heard that using automatic tranny fluid in your power steering unit will cause you to power shift higher in gear on right turns and shift into reverse on left turns...

That's what i've heard but my dealership still has it in bulk, I just changed mine a few weeks ago for the Procharger install. Parts guy just filled up a jug with ~1 quart of Mercon, even asked him if it was Mercon or Mercon V.
