Default GT vs GT500

First, this is my first post in the forums, and thank you guys for allowing it. Ha. Second, I've had a V6 '06 for 7 years and I love my Mustang. I am now looking for more oomph, and decided that an engine swap isn't for me. I just want some of your opinions on buying a new 2013 GT vs a 2009 GT500 with 13,xxx miles. I'm not able to test drive the GT500 as it's half a country away, but I can get either for the same price. I know the '09 doesn't compare to a new GT500, but what do you guys think of it compared to a GT. Or, rather, would the GT with the incredible new features inside the cab satisfy as much as the older features and the bigger performance?

hello -

here is a good thread on this very topic - this is something that many new gt owners consider before making a decision. I know I struggled with it for a bit.

https://mustangforums.com/forum/gt-s...-07-gt500.html

boils down to .. is the coyote enough power for you? are the extra features, 'new car' pros, warranty, aesthetics differences etc worth more to you then the performance level of the gt500?

I suggest you go find local versions of each to test drive, that should tell you everything you need to know. I promise you can find a GT500 that is similar enough to test drive locally.

What are you exactly wanting from the car?
do you care about sound, power numbers, name plates/emblems? If all you really care about is more oomph over your current v6, then the new 3.7L v6 will give that to you at a fraction of the cost of both the GT and GT500.

Sound is pretty important to me, but that is easily taken care of, even by someone like me. Power numbers are somewhat important, but as you said, anything I'm looking at would be better than what I have and will likely open my eyes quite a bit, but just something about that snake.... lol

GT500 without a doubt. If you are looking to make serious power and want a safe/reliable platform, it's definitely the way to go.

Here's a Paxton blown 5.0 making ~600rwhp at the time vs me (~650 at the time and carrying a 320lb passenger w/me) and haven't even considered looking at the internals yet) GT500's are "safe" to about 750rwhp before looking at getting internals. Blown 5.0's at 11:1 compression are a ticking timebomb without internals. Especially with that cylinder # 8 issue. But one of my good friends just picked up a '13 GT and they are nice cars, just have to figure out what power level you see yourself being down the road. HP is addictive...

Another vote for the GT500.

A couple of years ago I was looking at a new 5.0 until a buddy pointed out I could get a used GT500 for the same (or maybe even a little less) money. I found one, bought it, and have never regretted it for a minute. It really all depends on what you want out of the car... I have a couple of good friends with new 5.0s and they are great cars, Make good power stock, and they are very refined as far as interior, handling, and the way they apply power through the rpm range. The 07-09 GT500 is not really like that after you do a couple of mods to it.... it is more like an assault on all your basic senses at the same time. You really need to test drive one, I think you will be hooked once you do. Plus, they are SUPER easy to mod, and you can make 525-540rwhp with very little effort and investment... tune/pulley/CAI will pick up about 100-110 rwhp on a 07-09 GT500.

You have an '06, so you know if the interior is something worth trading up or not. Do you like the interior of your '06 or do you want the interior of the '10+? It is all up to opinion on that. I personally like the simplistic interior of the '05-'09, but some find it cheap.

Really that would be the only thing I could see that would sway you to get the '13 instead of a GT500.

GT500 all the way. We had the same choice. The Shelby is a BEASST and will smoke the new 5.0 stock for stock... Has alot more growth potential, cheaper to upgrade, more looks from pll, more prestige, more collectibility, more prestige, and you get to be a part of the. Shelby legend and history. I drve both. NO comparison even though the 5.0 is a great car. Take it from me and others who did the same. GT500 without a second thought!
