Default Advice on transmission options

Hello,

I posted earlier about how my auto tranny was making a grinding sound when it downshifts to second, but does not slip. I checked the fluid and the problem is getting worse. I now hear a whine when I am doing 60mph (like something is going to snap). But no slipping.

I plan to take it to get looked at but I had a few questions:

1. Can anyone recommend a tranny shop in the DC metro area they trust?
2. I was told race shops are typically cheaper when it comes to rebuilding transmissions; is this true?
3. Should I have my tranny rebuilt, buy used, or maybe consider getting a manual setup?
4. What should I be paying for a rebuild or refurb tranny with labor? I have been quoted in the past for my van that a tranny rebuild would cost $2400-$3000; I imagine my Mustang might be more?

Thanks all
